The sampler is used in soil exploration and is used fordetermining the penetration (N value) for soil by giving anumber of blows with a given weight through a given distanceand by measuring the length of penetration at differentdepths. It meets the requirements of IS : 2131 and is madefrom a tube split lengthwise and held together by a head fittedwith a ball check valve and a hardened steel shoe. Thesample is 50.8 mmin outer diameter and has and in de cuttingedge of 35 mm. After it is forced into the soil by ramming andwith-drawn from the hole, the shoe and head are unscrewedand the sampler opens like a book with brass liner.
